An exponent is the little number above the base number.
The exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base number times itself.
23 is another way to write 2 X 2 X 2. It is 2 times itself 3 times.
23 = 8 because 2 X 2 = 4 and then 4 X 2 = 8
A base number raised to the power of 0 is always equaled to 1.
Example: 20 = 1
A base number raised to the power of 1 is always equaled to the base number.
Example: 21 = 2
