A root is the oposite of an exponent.
This is the symbol for a square root.
It asks the question, "What number, when squared, equals the number that comes after this symbol?".
2√9 = 3 because 3 times itself twice (3 X 3) equals 9.
This is the symbol for a cubed root.
It asks the question, "What number, when cubed, equals the number that comes after this symbol?".
3√8 = 2 because 2 times itself three times (2 X 2 X 2) equals 8.
Doing this in steps, 2 X 2 = 4 and then 4 X 2 = 8. Therefore 2 X 2 X 2 = 8. In other words 23=8.
So since 2 cubed equals 8, then the cubed root of 8 equals 2. Remember roots are the opposite of exponents.
